The Supreme Court has agreed to review the convictions of former President Mohamed Nasheed, Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, former defense minister Mohamed Nazim, and former MP Ahmed Nazim.

Nasheed’s case was filed for review by the Prosecutor General’s office, while the others filed their own cases for review.

Nasheed was given 13-year prison sentence for the arrest and detention of a judge during his presidency, former minister Nazim was given an 11-year sentence for smuggling weapons, Imran was given 12 years over terrorism-related charges over a speech he gave at a protest, and former MP Nazim was sentenced to 25 years over corruption.

On Monday night, the Supreme Court confirmed that it has accepted their cases for review.

The Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s sentence on Nasheed in 2016 and rejected Imran’s appeal the first time he filed it. The Supreme Court had also sentenced MP Nazim in 2015 before the Criminal Court or High Court gave their verdict.

Nasheed and MP Nazim are currently in self-exile abroad, while Imran is under house arrest and minister Nazim is abroad on a medical trip.

Nasheed has announced that he will be returning to Maldives on Thursday.
