Former Magistrate Judge Ahmed Nihan has filed a case at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) claiming he has been tortured while in incarceration.

Judge Nihan, of the Maamigili magistrate court, had been forcibly removed from his cell and kept handcuffed outside for extended periods, his lawyers say.

Shadiya Adam, a member of Nihan’s legal team, said that the judge has now been moved to a different cell and that the HRCM is investigating the matter.

Judge Nihan was sentenced to 17 years in prison after having been found guilty of forging an arrest warrant for incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

Nihan was also accused of abusing his position and supporting a conspiracy to remove President Yameen from office. He was tried.

Nihan was sentenced on 16th June, 2016 under terrorism charges. Last week, the High Court denied his request to be released on bail.
