The Maldivian High Court has on Thursday overturned Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon’s jail sentence.

The High Court concluded that the sentence against him was passed in ‘haste’ and highlighted a number of issues with the lower court sentencing.

The Criminal Court previously sentenced MP Fairs to four months and 24 days in prison on charges of identity fraud.

Faris had been accused of using the Progressive Party of Madives’ flag and logo at a press conference with other members of the opposition, while he had been removed from the party’s list of members earlier.

Faris was sentenced in June last year but has been released on bail until the proceedings over his appeal at the High Court conclude. The hearings for the appeal concluded on 3rd October.
