Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb should be treated humanely and has the right to leave the country for medical treatment, says opposition leader and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Maumoon said this in a tweet he sent out on Wednesday, where he highlighted that it has been three years since Adeeb was jailed for a decades-long sentence.

“It is 3 years since former VP Adeeb was jailed. As all prisoners, he must be treated humanely and must be allowed to go abroad for medical treatment as advised by doctors”, the tweet says.

Opposition aligned MP Mariya Ahmed Didi also said in a tweet on Thursday that she has been told that the former vice president’s medical condition is getting worse.

“I’m told jailed Former VP Ahmed Adeeb’s condition is getting worse with him developing kidney stones and cysts that need urgent attention. He has a problem with his eyes too which needs treatment. Everyone should have access to proper medical treatment”, MP Mariya said.

The former vice president, who is serving a jail sentence for multiple charges including an attempted assassination of the president and large-scale corruption, has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones, and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.

After his family and lawyers released a statement and the matter became contentious, with it ultimately having been filed at the United Nations and scrutinized by Amnesty International, Yameen’s attorney general Adeeb poses a significant flight risk and will not be allowed to leave the country.
