Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has on Tuesday, departed to Malaysia for medical treatment.

RaajjeMV understands that the former strongman and former First Lady Nasreena Ibrahim had arrived in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia on Tuesday for medical checkups. This was revealed via a tweet Gayoom had posted on his official twitter account, which revealed the former first couple’s arrival, going on to state that he “would need one” after nearly eight months in confinement.

While Vice President-elect Faisal Naseem, supporters and well-wishers had seen him off at the Velana International Airport, Gayoom had thanked them for turning up at the airport.

Gayoom was diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo during his time in prison, and had been receiving treatment on several occasions. While he was kept in solitary confinement, doctors had advised against letting him stay alone.

After being slapped with a prison conviction of a year and seven months, the strongman had been granted bail in early October, with the authorities later having nullified the conviction against him.
