Elections Commission (EC) has stated that it does not recognize President Abdulla Yameen as the leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
At a press conference on Monday, commission member Ahmed Akram said they still address the President as the ruling party’s chief advisor.
Akram said that the commission does not acknowledge the decisions made at the recent PPM congress since there were 42 non-members present at the event and that some of those appointed to senior positions in the party at the congress were also non-members.
He said that, since the congress did not abide by regulations, the commission does not recognize or endorse those elected to the party leadership at the event.
Commission chief Ahmed Shareef has also confirmed that he recognizes President Yameen only as PPM’s chief advisor.
Akram said that the commission has decided not to communicate with PPM until its court case against the party is concluded.
