The Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has been slapped with a several thousand rufiyaa fine for forgoing an environmental impact assessment for its Malé Ring Road Development Project.
In addition to this, the ministry has not carried out an assessment for its ring road development project in the southern Fuvahmulah city. The total fines for this is MVR 80,000.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that ministry had not carried out Environmental Impact Assessments for either projects, as required by law. The fines are to be paid within 30 days.
The ministry was fined by MVR 20,000, the allocated amount for first-time offense. The Environmental Protection Agency however fined the ministry by MVR 60,000 for not carrying out the assessment for the project in Fuvahmulah.
The ministry was also fined on 15th October for having illegally drained water from land in capital city Malé. The ministry has also been fined by MVR 191,250 for cutting down trees in Malé’s outer road.
