All Elections Commission members in Sri Lanka, except one, have returned to Maldives.
Most of the commission members had left to the neighboring country after they began receiving death threats over the presidential election result.
Speaking to RaajjeMV on Wednesday, commission spokesperson Ahmed Akram said that he returned on Tuesday night and that deputy commissioner Amjad Mustafa and member Ali Nashath are also in Maldives.
Ismail Khabeeb is now the only commission member in Sri Lanka. Spokesperson Akram said Khabeeb will return as soon as he completes his medical treatment this week.
Commission chief Ahmed Shareef had stayed in Maldives even after receiving the threats.
Responding to claims by the ruling party that the commission members had fled the country, Akram said that they left abroad after completing the necessary work after announcing the election result, as is allowed in their regulation.
President Yameen has accused the commission of rigging the election after his devastating loss, and his supporters have been protesting since. The outgoing President has also filed a case at the Supreme Court requesting to nullify the election result.
However, the Elections Commission has stated that neither the commission nor observers found any result-altering issues on election day and that no major complaints have been filed either.
