RaajjeMV has received reports that Maldives Police Service (MPS) has halted their investigations into the various money-laundering accusations raised against outgoing President Abdulla Yameen.

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)’s finance intelligence unit had filed a case at the MPS following the exorbitant amount of money transferred to President Yameen’s bank account while the Presidential Election was upon the country, in mid-September.

Al Jazeera had, in 2016, exposed the massive corruption including theft, bribery and money laundering in its award-winning documentary ‘Stealing Paradise’.

Although the case was filed at the MPS, President Yameen had been allowed to contest in the Presidential ballots.

RaajjeMV was unable to attain an official comment from MPS regarding the matter at the time of publishing. However, a credible source had revealed that MPS is not carrying out their investigations into any of the money-laundering cases against President Yameen, who recently lost his bid for re-election in the Presidential polls held on the 23rd of September.

The credible source, who gave an anonymous statement, told RaajjeMV that senior officials of the police force had ordered the halt of the investigations.

The country’s outgoing President Yameen has drawn many corruption allegations throughout his five-year term, including receiving millions of Dollars through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the company implicated in the biggest embezzlement case observed in Maldives history. However, the President refuted all allegations raised against him,

Although spokesperson at the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali had asserted that the case filed at police by the MMA had been taken back, the authority had released a statement that refutes the spokesperson’s assertion, stating that they had not taken back any cases from the MPS.

Former Acting Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz was removed from his post and then Assistant Police Commissioner, Hamdhoon Rasheed was appointed to the post during the days the case had been lodged.
