President Abdulla Yameen’s authoritarian rule in the Maldives was annihilated with the help of the opposition’s ability to work peacefully from abroad, says Self-exiled Maldives first democratically-elected President Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed made this statement via social media upon meeting with former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron on Monday. As such, the former President took to twitter on Monday, expressing his joy in having met with the former PM.

In his tweet, Nasheed thanked PM Cameron for his role in “facilitating” his exile.

“The opposition's ability to work peacefully from abroad helped lead to the demise of President Yameen’s authoritarian rule back home” reads Nasheed’s tweet.

It is notable that PM Cameron has maintained a close bond with Nasheed, with his Conservative Party having close ties with Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

While several prominent political figures had traveled to the UK to escape Yameen’s tyrannical grip over the Maldives, most of them have been granted political asylum by the government of UK. Following this, the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives had brought amendments to the constitution that prohibits those living in self-exile from vying for Presidency.
