Elections Commission (EC) has nullified the decisions made at the Progress Party of Maldives (PPM) congress.
In a tweet on Wednesday, the commission stated that it cannot endorse the decisions made at the PPM’s sudden congress on September 28 as the event was held against legal boundaries.

This is the first time that a party congress has been nullified and comes after former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, PPM’s former leader, requested the EC to do so.
In the letter sent to the commission, Maumoon said that the reason for holding the party congress did not fit the criteria laid down by Article 33(a) of PPM’s regulations and.
He also noted that the PPM council’s five-year term ended in January and that the congress can only be held under the leadership of the party’s president, who was earlier unjustifiably dismissed.
