United States of America has welcomed the Election Commission’s final result of the Maldives’ presidential election, saying that it looks forwards to working with President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government.

In a tweet sent out on Tuesday, America’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said that it welcomes ‘Elections Commission’s certification of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral win’.

“[We] look forward to working with the government of President-elect Solih in support of a democratic and prosperous Maldives and a free and open Indo-Pacific,” reads the tweet.

America had congratulated Solih last Monday as well, with U.S. State Department’s spokesperson Heather Nauert commending the Maldivian people for their ‘commitment to the democratic process and exceptional level of participation in an election that had ushered in a new chapter in their country’s history’.

“We expect all parties to respect the will of the Maldivian people and support a peaceful transition of power through the November 17 inauguration,” she added.

While America has welcomed Elections Commission’s final result, the ruling party, along with outgoing President Abdulla Yameen, took to the streets on Monday night, accusing the Commission of electoral fraud.

While Yameen had been vying for reelection in the 2018 presidential election, he lost to Solih; who won with 58.4 percent of the votes.
