The opposition-aligned Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) has said that they will file a case in court to have the results of the ruling party’s congress annulled.

The MRM, a break-away faction of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, said that they have already filed a case contesting the lawfulness of the congress held on Friday.

Abdul Aleem, an MRM member who was secretary-general of the ruling party, said that the congress was held unlawfully and changes made in it are against the party’s procedures.

Aleem said that the congress should have been held with the participation of the Progressive Party of Maldives’ electoral committee, although none of its members had been present at the proceedings.

While the party elected incumbent President Abdulla Yameen to its leadership, and appointed several members to its council, Aleem claims their new appointments are illegitimate.

The court has yet to decide on the case filed by MRM, which is led by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom -- the founder and 'honorary leader' of the ruling party.
