The Maldives Police Service (MPS) will uphold the ‘decision of the people’ and the outcome of Sunday’s presidential elections, says acting-commissioner of police Abdulla Nawaz.

The MPS sent out a tweet on Wednesday which said that the institution respects the outcome of the elections, and informs the public as such.

The tweet translates to, ‘The Maldivian police respects and will uphold the decision made by the people on 23rd September. We inform our beloved citizens of this'.

Speaking on the phone with RaajjeMV, acting-commissioner Nawaz said that the police will not allow the results of the ballots to be tampered with.

Nawaz’ comments comes hours after reports of voter registration fraud surfaced on Wednesday night, which potentially could void the results of the ballots.

The Maldives National Defence Force and the military chief has also said that his officers would uphold the results of the votes that threw out incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.
