Business tycoon and former president Mohamed Nasheed’s political advisor Abdulla Jabir, who has been living in Britain-granted asylum, is to arrive in Maldives on Wednesday.

Jabir, a former parliamentarian, announced his impending arrival through a tweet he posted Tuesday night, in which he congratulates president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

“After living in UK’s protection for over a year, I will arrive in the Maldives on UL103 Colombo at 1950hrs, to meet my friends, to live peacefully without fear, and to get my business on its feet! God willing, congratulations president-elect Solih”, the tweet says.

Jabir discovered a travel ban on him after arriving in the United Kingdom from a brief stay in Italy in June, 2017. When inquired, he was told that there was an ongoing investigation into his businesses and that the police are searching for him.

His company, Yacht Tours, was sued for not paying rent fines for the Beenafushi and Kndaali Finolhu sandbanks in Haa Alif atoll, which were leased to the company.

After his accounts were frozen, Jabir denounced the allegations as a smear attempt and claimed his company ‘owes no money’ to the state.

Former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, former transport minister Ameen Ibrahim, former MP Ahmed Nazim, and former MP Ali Waheed all sought political asylum in the UK, fleeing prosecution at the hands of the government, which has garnered a reputation for ruthless suppression of dissent.
