Prison facility on Maafushi island brought to an emergency situation
Several prominent political figures are currently detained in the prison facility
No specific reason was revealed as to why the facility was brought on alert
Some changes had been brought to holders of senior posts in the facility

Prison facility on Maafushi island in Kaafu atoll, where several prominent political figures are incarcerated, has been brought to an emergency situation.

Senior prisons officer at the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), Ahmed Luqman confirmed the matter to RaajjeMV on Monday, stating that an emergency situation had arisen in Maafushi Prison sometime today.

However, Officer Luqman had not divulged further details nor why the emergency situation had been brought.

High profile detainees at Maafushi Prison include several opposition lawmakers, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, former Supreme Court Chief of Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed, three of whom were arrested following the state of emergency declared across the nation on the 05th of February, following the contentious Supreme Court ruling issuing the release of political prisoners and reinstatement of opposition aligned lawmakers on the 01st of February.

While the emergency situation has been brought to the prison facility, it is notable that lawyer visits have also not been granted to prisoners for a while now.

MCS had even brought some changes to senior posts at the facility recently.
