Many members of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) will come out against President Abdulla Yameen within the week, says Aminath Nadira, a member of the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM).

A team from MRM, a break-away faction of the ruling party, has returned to the capital city after touring the atolls campaigning for the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking to the press after returning on Sunday, Nadira said in their trip they have seen that President Yameen has no support from PPM members that support former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom due to his oppression and the party’s internal conflict which he was a part of.

She said that they will show President Yameen that he will be unable to win the elections without the support of President Maumoon, his half-brother who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government and is now serving a prison sentence over obstruction.

Nadira also said that according to the PPM’s regulation Maumoon is still the leader of the party and expressed her hope that Maumoon and the other political prisoners will be released after November 17.

Answering a question from a RaajjeMV journalist, she said that PPM members will be very vocal in their opposition to President Yameen this week.
