Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that they are yet to determine the validity of the re-registration voters list.

While the Elections Commission published the list this Sunday, MDP's deputy chair Ali Niyaz on Monday night said that the party is analyzing the list and that complaints will be shared 'within 24 hours'.

Noting vast differences in the percentage of registered voters in some atolls compared to 2013, Niyaz said that Faafu, Laamu and Meemu atolls are among these.

He said that there is 'a 40% increase in Faafu atoll, 27% in Laamu atoll and 26 in Meemu'.

Hence, Niyaz stated that they have yet to determine the validity of the list.

Noting various discrepancies in the list published, he said that they will attempt to 'clear up the issues' soon.

"Statistics from 2013 show that that there were 63,383 re-registered voters. Eligible voters have increased by 10% since then. That is around 24,000 votes. However, there is an 24% increase in re-registered voters. We predicted a 15% increase at the most," Niyaz added.

While complaint submission has been opened from 27th to 29th August, Niyaz noted that General Elections Act states that 10-day period should be given to do so.
