Civil Court has thrown out RaajjeTV’s request to issue an order for the privately-run TV station to pay the MVR 2 million fine imposed by the Broadcasting Commission to a later date.

RaajjeTV’s attorney Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim said that the court’s registrar has confirmed on Wednesday that the case was thrown out.

The court stated that any appeal on a fine imposed over a violation of the Anti-Defamation Act should be submitted after the fine is paid in full within the deadline.

The broadcasting commission penalized RaajjeTV for the fourth time with the maximum allowed fine of MVR 2 million after the TV station aired a politician’s statement during an opposition rally on March 16 that was deemed to have defamed President Abdulla Yameen and threatened national security.

However, none of the nation’s security services have expressed any concern over the statement or investigated the incident or even taken a statement from the politician.

The total amount of fines imposed on RaajjeTV has reached MVR 3.7 million.
