The first ever heart bypass has successfully been concluded in the Maldives, by privately run ADK Hospital.

According to ADK Hospital, the nine-hour bypass was performed on a 54-year-old man and only Maldivian surgeons were active during the surgery. The hospital, revealed this at a press conference held on Thursday afternoon.

Albeit the surgery having concluded successfully, ADK revealed that the man’s condition is yet unstable, going on to state that it will take a few days for his condition to stabilize.

Speaking to press, ADK Hospital’s Managing Director Ahmed Affaal said that they believe they have stepped up the medical amenities available in Maldives by a large scale and that they will further work to enhance the medical amenities of Maldives in the near future.

“With this successful first surgery, the medical amenities of Maldives have been taken to a whole new level. We hope to introduce more such services in the future” said Affaal.

The surgery was performed in the Hassan Ibrahim Tier of Excellence in Cardiovascular Care and Theatre Complex (HITECC) which was inaugurated in ADK in mid-March this year. The HITECC has so far performed 56 angiographies and 14 angioplasties. According to ADK, these services come in packages and Aasandha Insurance Scheme covers 75% of the cost for treatment.

While the complex operates with three theatres specialized for open heart surgeries and a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory, it is claimed that this is one of the largest developments that was established at the hospital.
