Opposition coalition’s Vice-Presidential candidate Faisal Naseem has pledged to make the Maldives Police Service an institution that has the full trust of citizens.

After completing his re-registration process for the Presidential Election slated for the 23rd of September, Naseem called on police and military officers to act in an appropriate way for a civilized society and to stop tearing down the opposition’s campaign posters and arrested protestors.

“The opposition coalition assures officers of the police service that they will not be forced to carry out dirty work. A unity government by the opposition will ensure the police service is reformed to carry out acts in accordance with the Maldives Constitution with honor and dignity. We pledge to make the police service one that has the full trust of the citizens, 100%,” said Naseem.

Naseem further said that all contesting parties must be given equal opportunity to contest and that what is seen now are “disgraceful acts”.

“We see arrests within our campaign activities. They tear down our campaign posters and these are disgraceful acts. Today, I want to call on officers of the police to refrain from acting out of the constitution and legal ambit in attempts to impress and please a particular individual.” Said Naseem.

Moreover, the opposition Vice Presidential candidate further said that acts of intimidation towards employees of the state will not bring success, going on to state that most civil service employees are pleading to liberate them from the current obstructions they face. Naseem added that the citizen’s will to change the current administration is crystal clear from the opposition’s campaign visit to Meemu and Vaavu atolls.

Naseem further pledged to resolve the health services that have deteriorated in the outlying atolls. He continually asserted that citizens do not have to beg the government to uphold their basic rights.
