The presidential election is set for September 23

Hithadhoo-South constituency MP Ali Nizar has said that the consequences will be worse, if the government do not give room for a free and fair presidential election.

He said this while speaking on RaajjeTV's Fala Surukhee programme on Monday night, where he expressed hope that incumbent President Abdulla Yameen and his administration will allow for free and fair elections.

He added that Maldivians have patiently been waiting for September 23, for the past five years.

Speaking on reports that the government is working to meddle with the election, Nizar warned that it could lead to 'unthinkable repercussions', including violence.

He said that neither Maldivians nor the international community will accept everything that is being done, just because one has the power to do so.

Furthermore, Nizar noted that despite President Yameen's stance on Islam, that his government has failed to follow its principles.
