President Abdulla Yameen has said that he was not able to fulfill his housing pledge during his term.

The President said this on Thursday night during his speech in the ceremony at Republic Square to celebrate Maldives’ 53rd Independence Day.

During the speech, President Yameen said that the nation was in a fragile state when he began his term in office and that the state had very little money and was in a state of ‘civil war’.

However, he said that housing development has greatly improved in the last 10 years and that after the development of Villimale’ and Hulhumale’ is completed, no citizen would be without a living space of at least 1000 square feet.

“Maldives’ development chart can only be complete with housing. By 2030 all young people will have housing. Within 10 years all the necessities of the Maldivian people will be given.”

President Yameen added that 100,000 people will receive housing in Hulhumale’ and 300,000 people will receive housing in Villimale’-2.

Also during his speech, he agreed that he was not able to fulfill his housing pledge or pledge to give apartments to every newlywed couple.

It is noteworthy that the groundwork for the housing projects completed in the current administration were begun by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government.
