Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed who served as incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s first Vice President has said that this is the time for pro-government entrepreneurs to “use their brains”.
Upon the United Kingdom having on July 19, begun implementing the framework adopted against the Maldives government by the European Union last Monday, Jameel took to twitter on Saturday, typing out a tweet in Dhivehi calling on pro-government entrepreneurs to steer clear of President Yameen before their names are added to the list of persons targeted for sanctions.
Jameel further goes on to assert that the biggest loss to the “brand” of Maldives is the current administration’s 'crimes'.
The European Union, on 16th July, adopted a framework for sanctions against Maldives, which allows for the freezing of funds and economic resources of certain persons, entities and bodies responsible for serious human rights violations in the Maldives as well as persons, entities and bodies associated with them ‘if the situation [in the country] does no improve’.
Following this decision, the UK’s office of Financial Sanctions Implementation run by Her Majesty’s Treasury issued a notice on the 19th of July.
UK is the first nation to begin implementing this framework.
