Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is to take a week-long break from campaigning and head out of the country.
He made the announcement after arriving at Velana International Airport following the conclusion of a successful trip to southern Addu and Fuvahmulah cities.
Solih said that he will reconvene his campaign activities in the atolls ‘next Monday’.
While Solih did not reveal the destination or purpose of his visit, his last visit abroad was to neighboring Sri Lanka to join Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s congress discussion. During the trip he met with leader and its initial presidential candidate, former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed won the party’s presidential ticket in the primary held in May, with over 43,000 votes. However, he chose to withdraw from the race citing Elections Commission’s insistence that he will not be allowed to contest given his 2015 prison conviction.
Solih returned to Malé on Monday after spending the past three days conducting door-to-door campaign activities in Addu and Fuvahmulah cities.
Noting that he met with a number of the residents from both cities, Solih said that they are “impatient” to end this tyranny.
