President Abdulla Yameen has ratified the first amendment to the General Elections Act on Monday.
Over 30 amendments were proposed to the general elections act by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) including regarding the conducting of an election, the right to vote in an election, the voters’ registry, registry complaints and more.
A vote was taken at the seventh sitting of the second session of the Parliament and 34 lawmakers had voted in favor of the bill. Opposition aligned lawmakers have been boycotting parliamentary sittings on the grounds that they do not recognize Abdulla Maseeh as Speaker, citing the multiple no-confidence motions filed against him.
The bill proposed by Holhudhoo constituency MP Ali Mohamed was passed in less than two weeks, along with two amendments to the Presidential Elections Act.
