Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim has departed to Turkey on an official visit as President Abdulla Yameen’s special envoy.
According to the foreign ministry, the minister is in Turkey to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He is to be sworn in as the country’s first executive president following his election victory last month.
While the foreign minister is to attend the ceremony in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, as the president’s special envoy, he is accompanied by the ministry’s Desk Officer, Mohamed Shujau.
Dozens of foreign leaders and dignitaries are expected to attend Monday’s inauguration ceremony.
Maldives and Turkey has a long history of close relations and the 39th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries was marked this May.
Erdoğan, Turkey’s long-standing leader, secured outright victory in the first round of presidential poll, with nearly 53% of the votes. He declared himself the winner even before the official results were confirmed.
