Bill proposed to criminalize racism and black magic

A set of amendments proposed to the penal code aims to criminalize racism and black magic.

The amendments, which sets aggravated criminal classifications and harsher jail terms, was proposed by Feydhoo constituency MP Ibrahim Didi.

According to the amendment, the use of black magic is to be made a Class-3 misdemeanor and individuals found guilty are to be sentenced to four months in prison.

MP Ibrahim Didi has also proposed to criminalize discrimination based on race, nationality, and appearance – included in the bill as ‘colour’. Racial discrimination is to be made a Class 1 misdemeanor.  

If passed, such racial discrimination resulting in the loss of lives will be made a Class 1 felony, and result in a 10-year jail term.
