The Maldivian Democratic Party’s bid for presidency in September’s ballots is not political, but an effort to end injustice and corruption, says MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the party’s presidential candidate.
MP Solih, a veteran member of the party who was tapped for candidacy after the party’s elected candidate Mohamed Nasheed withdrew, said this while speaking at a campaign event on Wednesday night.
At the event, Solih said that the party has been working for democratic reform in the Maldives ever since party leader, former president Nasheed, had been ousted in a military coup.
The party’s presidential candidate further said that they aim to acquire votes from at least 55 percent of capital city Malé.
Solih said that given the party, and their opposition coalition’s ongoing efforts, this goal is attainable and that he is confident that incumbent President Abdulla Yameen will be defeated in the ballots.
