Ministry removes Male’ City Council’s name plate from its section

The Male’ City Council’s name plate at the Vital Registration section has been removed by a Housing Ministry official, says Mayor Shifa Mohamed.

In a tweet on Tuesday afternoon, Shifa said that the ministry did not give a notice before removing the name plate.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Shifa said they have filed a report at the police station since taking away their name plate shows that there is no safety or protection at the office.

She said she told the police that due to the lack of apparent safety, she will not be responsible for what happens to any document or property in the office.

The Mayor noted that the Male’ registry is something that the council looks after even though Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that his ministry is to begin handling the registry. Shifa said that it was highly likely that the government is trying to influence the voters list for September’s election, adding that it was questionable why the Housing Ministry would be interested in a place that stores people’s personal information so close to the election.

RaajjeMV was unable to get a word from the Housing Ministry.

The Male’ City Council Vital Registration has the authority to produce birth certificates, removing the deceased from registries, etc.
