The allied opposition parties, who have collectively become known as the Joint Opposition, are to gather on Wednesday night with the families of individuals described to be unfairly detained.
The gathering is to be held at the Jumhooree Party’s headquarters in capital city Malé, Kunooz, and set to begin at 09:00 PM.
The gathering will have the families of arrested individals in the opposition parties’ leadership, individuals apprehended on charges said to have been motivated by political adversary, and apprehended lawmakers.
The Joint Opposition has been holding nightly rallies in Malé, calling for President Abdulla Yameen’s resignation and for judicial independence, given that the government has refused to implement a unanimous Supreme Court ruling.
The Supreme Court justices had deemed that nine individuals currently serving criminal sentences were victims of unfair judicial process and should be released to be tried again.
On February 8th, three of the Supreme Court’s remaining justices had reppealed this ruling after Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were arrested and charged with bribery and conspiring to overthrow the government.
