Maldives prisons chief quits
Maafushi Prison is now under the control of the deputy director
Supreme Court on Thursday night ordered the release of all political prisoners
The court ruling also ordered the Prosecutor General to take legal action against any authority that refuses to abide by the decision

Director of Prisons Salman Rasheed has resigned.

News outlet Mihaaru reported that it has confirmed the resignation.

However, RaajjeMV was unable to get a confirmation from Maldives Correctional Service’s Information Officer after repeated calls and messages.

After Rasheed’s resignation, Maldives’ largest prison Maafushi is now under the control of deputy director Abdulla Yameen.

Supreme Court on Thursday night ordered the release of these political prisoners:

  • Former President Mohamed Nasheed, leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
  • Qasim Ibrahim, leader of Jumhoree Party (JP).
  • Imran Abdulla, leader of Adhaalath Party (AP).
  • Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
  • Former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim.
  • Former Prosecutor General Muhthaz Muhsin.
  • MP Faris Maumoon.
  • Judge Ahmed Nihan.

The court ruling, signed by five supreme Court justices, also ordered the Prosecutor General to take legal action against any authority that refuses to abide by the decision.
