Old five rufiyaa note to be nullified on Monday

MMA will keep exchanging the old five Rufiyaa notes for the new ones until 31 July 2021

Sunday is the last day the old five Rufiyaa banknote can be used as legal tender.

Central bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has said it will keep exchanging the old five Rufiyaa notes for the new ones until 31 July 2021.

The new five Rufiyaa note was introduced on May 10, and went into circulation on August 10. It features an image of national football legend Ali Ashfaq.

The note is part of the “Ran Dhihafaheh” polymer note series designed by Abdulla Nashaath. The series originally included a MVR 5 coin, but was changed into a banknote due to criticisms.

The polymer note series, introduced on the 50th anniversary of Maldives independence, boasts several strong security features, and each note has a different color and theme.
