Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that the city's worsening traffic congestion is a direct result of permits being issued for non-existent garages.
Mayor Azim made these remarks while responding to concerns raised by a member of the public during a community meeting titled "People's Land, People's Voice." During the session, a resident highlighted that while public vehicles are being towed daily, no real solution has been found for Male' City's persistent congestion issues.
In response to these concerns, Mayor Azim stated that the Male' City Council had previously issued permits for four-wheeled vehicles by falsely verifying the existence of non-existent garages. He further noted that this practice is a primary reason for the city's worsening traffic congestion.
One of the primary reasons traffic conditions initially deteriorated is due to the actions of certain individuals who submitted numerous fraudulent documents to the police. This issue arose from the sale of garage space permits for vehicles to households that did not actually possess the required space. The situation has escalated to this point because some within our own community have significantly compromised the system. In Malé, permits have been issued for four-wheeled vehicles under the false pretense that they have designated garage spaces, when in reality, no such facilities exist.Adam Azim
Noting that these cases have been forwarded to the police for investigation, Mayor Azim emphasized the need for the police institution to be more robust and effective. He further stated that those responsible for these crimes must be brought to justice.
Mayor Azim stated that the Male' City Council's responsibility is to refer cases to investigative authorities, confirming that these matters have already been forwarded. Furthermore, the Mayor noted that issues will remain unresolved as long as offenders are not penalized, highlighting that this lack of enforcement is the primary reason the city's traffic problems persist.
