Former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla has stated that even if President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration signs an agreement with Eagle Hills to develop Ras Male', any new government formed in 2028 will terminate the contract without providing any compensation.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Sheikh Imran stated that the government is facing significant pressure due to growing public opposition over the reported permanent allocation of a large portion of Ras Male' to Eagle Hills. He noted that this public outcry has led to delays and complications in the signing process. Furthermore, Imran revealed he has received information suggesting that the situation has escalated to a point where Eagle Hills is now being forced to reconsider its position on the matter.
Sheikh Imran alleged that the primary obstacle preventing the government from backtracking on this matter is their inability to repay the funds entrusted to the individual referred to as 'Brother Abdullah.' He stated that it is up to the individuals involved to decide whether they will settle the debt by selling their private properties or through other means, adding that the Maldivian people will not let this issue rest.
Furthermore, Sheikh Imran stated that the National Movement has held discussions with potential presidential candidates for the 2028 elections, who have provided assurances that the agreement will be revoked under a future administration.
God willing, we will formally notify Eagle Hills of this decision. Even if an agreement has been signed, no compensation will be provided. Furthermore, we will inform them that, under the current arrangement, no further payments related to this matter should be made to any party other than the government. Should any such payments be made, they must accept full responsibility for the consequences.Imran Abdulla
Sheikh Imran stated that discussions are ongoing with all political leaders and influential citizens to ensure these matters, expressing confidence that these efforts will lead to a successful outcome.
