As the specialized treatment required is unavailable in the Maldives, the termination of state health insurance has forced the family to bear the medical expenses privately, highlighting the significant challenges vulnerable citizens encounter within the healthcare system

At just 30 years of age, Afrah Farhad has long served as the fundamental foundation and hope of his household. Carrying the responsibility of being the eldest child alongside three sisters, he consistently stepped forward as a dependable pillar for his loved ones, taking on family duties through upright conduct and hard work. Today, however, an unforeseen and harrowing trial has rendered him bedridden and disabled.
The young man was struck down by a catastrophic bout of decompression sickness during a fishing trip, an ordeal that has left him unable to stand or even remain seated in an upright position.

Witnessing her son reduced to this state has shattered his mother’s heart, yet her profound pain is magnified by the chilling dread of what could occur should his vital medical interventions come to an abrupt halt.
A critical medical journey and specialized rehabilitation
Following the incident that took place on July 11, Afrah underwent 26 consecutive days of medical care within the decompression chamber situated at ADK Hospital.
To pursue more advanced therapeutic interventions, he was subsequently transferred overseas to KIMS Hospital in Kerala, India, on August 3. Having experienced a total depletion of muscular strength across his waist and lower limbs, Afrah is in urgent need of specialized neuro-robotics rehabilitation.

Financial lifeline severed without warning
Precisely when his condition was at its most fragile, the state withdrew its financial backing, stating that the coverage threshold allocated under the Aasandha scheme had been exhausted.
Even though financial support was officially discontinued on September 5, Afrah’s family was left completely unaware until they received notification weeks later, on September 28.
Whilst desperate appeals managed to purchase a few extra days of assistance, this financially vulnerable household has been compelled to bear every single healthcare bill entirely on their own since October 29.
Salma Solih, Afrah’s mother, conveyed her immense grief when speaking to RaajjeMV, recounting through heavy sorrow how soul-crushing it felt to receive word that their Aasandha coverage had been withdrawn.
"There are individuals living amidst immense luxury across the Maldives. Why then must everyday, humble members of society be driven through such profound agony whenever catastrophe arrives? Shouldn't there be more accessible systems in place so that families like ours are spared from having to beg like this?"Salma Solih, Afrah’s mother
Further, whilst Aasandha directed the relatives to journey back home to the Maldives to seek specialized attention that does not actually exist within domestic borders, authorities have failed to name or point out any local healthcare facility capable of administering such complex care.

Shattered dreams and a mother’s cry for help
With decades of potential before him, this 30-year-old harbours the exact aspirations of any young person: the desire to stand independently on his own two feet, shield his loved ones from hardship, and experience a joyful life.
Instead, an absence of monetary resources looms as an insurmountable wall blocking these simple hopes. To be placed in a position where she must plead for her child’s recovery and survival is a source of agony no mother should endure.
Her weeping appeal remains straightforward and raw: "Please, find a way for my son to receive his treatment!"
Stark divide in basic healthcare access
Even as state leaders put forward towering rhetoric about elevating the Maldives to match the advanced development of Singapore, the sheer misery and abandonment felt by common citizens trying to obtain fundamental healthcare present a starkly conflicting portrait.
Afrah is not an isolated case; countless young individuals and impoverished households across this island nation find themselves completely locked out of a dependable healthcare safety net, reduced to pleading for lifesaving medical care.
The collective hope and heartfelt plea of all remains focused on opening an urgent pathway for Afrah to secure prompt treatment, granting him the opportunity to step into a brighter, healed future.
