Aasandha has temporarily suspended patient referrals to India's Amrita Hospital due to delays in receiving updated package pricing. The national health insurance provider confirmed that a price review is currently underway, and services will resume once a new agreement is signed. In the interim, arrangements are being made to ensure continuity of care for existing patients.

A delay in renewing the agreement between the national health insurance provider, Aasandha, and Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India, has caused significant hardship for numerous Maldivians seeking medical treatment at the facility.

Sending patients to Amrita Hospital, a facility frequently visited by many Maldivians for medical treatment, has recently been suspended under the Aasandha scheme. Speaking on a state media program regarding the matter, Aminath Zeeniya, Managing Director of Aasandha Company, stated that efforts are currently underway to renew agreements with overseas hospitals providing medical services under the national health insurance scheme.

Zeeniya stated that hospitals providing services abroad under the Aasandha scheme are required to submit their package pricing three to four months prior to the expiration of their existing agreements. She explained that the temporary suspension of patient referrals to Amrita Hospital was due to a delay by the facility in submitting these updated rates. According to Zeeniya, Amrita Hospital has now shared its pricing, and the process of reviewing these rates is currently underway.

Following a review of the pricing, a new agreement will be signed once both parties reach a consensus on the rates. In the meantime, patients currently receiving treatment at the hospital will continue to have uninterrupted access to services. In addition to Amrita Hospital, there are four other hospitals in Kochi where many Maldivians seek medical care. These are facilities that remain highly preferred by the Maldivian community.

Aasandha is the national healthcare insurance scheme established to provide medical treatment to every Maldivian citizen at the state's expense. With approximately three billion Rufiyaa spent annually on healthcare, these services are accessible at various hospitals in India and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, under the "Merana" scheme, the benefits of Aasandha are also extended to Maldivians residing in India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.

Despite the government's assurances to strengthen and reform the healthcare sector, numerous patients traveling abroad for medical treatment are facing significant hurdles due to delays in renewing agreements with foreign hospitals. At the same time, residents in several islands across the atolls are enduring severe hardships as a shortage of doctors and nurses has left local healthcare facilities unable to provide essential services.
