The Maldives Police Service has stated that the number of reported accidents in Male' and Hulhumale' has decreased significantly following a special operation to increase police presence and surveillance on the streets.
According to the latest operational statistics released by the police, these measures have led to a significant improvement in road safety and traffic conditions.
Highlighting the outcomes of "Operation Reckless Driving," which commenced on October 8, 2026, under the direction of the Commissioner of Police, the police stated that accidents have decreased by 36 percent over the past 20 days compared to the 20-day period prior to the operation's launch.
This represents a decrease of 43 accidents compared to the 117 incidents recorded prior to the operation. A total of 74 accidents occurred during this period. Police noted that such a significant reduction in Hulhumale', a district characterized by its wide and long thoroughfares, serves as evidence of the increasing public attentiveness toward road safety.
Furthermore, police stated that the initiatives carried out by Traffic Police and Road Management in Male' have yielded positive and encouraging results.
Specifically, while 128 accidents were recorded in Male' between September 21 and October 7, 2026, that figure fell to 106 between October 8 and 24 following the implementation of special measures. This represents a decrease of 22 accidents, or approximately 17.2 percent.
According to the police, a total of 3,151 vehicles were inspected during an operation conducted in Hulhumale' from October 8 to 27.
These include 2,800 motorcycles and 351 four-wheeled vehicles. Police stated that their objective is not solely focused on issuing fines and towing vehicles, but rather on prioritizing awareness and prevention before accidents occur.
Police stated that 808 individuals, involving 735 motorcycles and 73 four-wheeled vehicles, were given advice and warnings instead of facing formal penalties. However, authorities fined 23 drivers for operating vehicles in a manner that endangered public safety and 85 individuals for driving without the appropriate vehicle category license. Additionally, police confirmed that 145 vehicles were towed during the operation.
Regarding the operations conducted on the streets of Male', police reported that action has been taken against 600 instances of speeding and 19 cases of reckless driving. Furthermore, authorities issued warnings to 13 repeat offenders for dangerous driving. Police also noted that they have shared the details of 23 individuals—affiliated with various companies and institutions—with their respective employers to ensure they are held accountable for speeding violations.
Furthermore, police stated that action has been taken regarding 371 cases of vehicles failing to meet mandatory requirements and 171 instances of illegal parking that obstructed traffic flow.
The police stated that the primary contributors to the success of these operations are the members of the public who obey traffic regulations, drive responsibly, and cooperate with police checkpoints. Furthermore, as road safety is directly linked to the lives of all citizens, the police have urged everyone to consistently prioritize safety and security on the streets.
