Former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has failed and, having run out of viable solutions, is now on the verge of selling off national assets. He warned that the Maldives has currently reached its most perilous state yet.
Speaking at an MDP rally on Wednesday night, former Finance Minister Ameer stated that the Maldives' economy is currently on the brink of bankruptcy. He further asserted that the current administration lacks the competence to negotiate and secure significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from nations such as the UAE. Ameer also raised serious concerns regarding reports that a substantial portion of the Ras Malé project has been permanently granted to Eagle Hills.
Ameer stated that he is not opposed to foreign investment, adding that all Maldivians would support such development if it is implemented through the appropriate channels.
When a government fails and runs out of solutions, reaching a point of total stagnation, they will eventually resort to selling off the nation's assets. If their sole priority is to cling to power, they have already reached that desperate stage. They have now arrived at a point where they are willing to liquidate every last resource—essentially selling off the family silver—just to ensure they remain in office.Ibrahim Ameer
Highlighting the importance of listening to technical experts on economic matters, Ameer stated that during the MDP administration, decisions were always made by consulting and following the advice of technical professionals within the civil service. However, he noted that the current administration disregards the input of technical experts when making political decisions.
Therefore, Ameer called upon the nation's civil servants to stand up and speak out against such actions, even if political figures refuse to listen.
Furthermore, Ameer stated that those who previously labeled the MDP as irreligious are now engaging in actions that undermine the nation's religion and sovereignty. He added that if attempts are made to deprive girls of education and transform the Maldives into a place like Kandahar, civil servants at the Ministry of Education must also have the courage to speak out openly against such moves.
