Lack of transparency surrounding Eagle Hills project in Ras Male' poses significant national risk: Ihusan

Highlighting the project as a threat to the Maldives' economic stability and national sovereignty, he noted that the provision for repeated lease renewals effectively equates to a permanent sale of the land.

Former Deputy Minister of Education Mohamed Ihusan has stated that the lack of transparency surrounding the project proposed by Eagle Hills in Ras Male' poses a significant threat to the Maldives, its economy, and its national sovereignty.
Speaking during the special coverage titled "Dhivehinge Bin Dhivehinnah," Ihusan stated that while a significant portion of Ras Male' has reportedly been leased to Eagle Hills for 99 years, information has been received suggesting that Zionist settlers may be permitted to establish residency there.
He stated that although the government claims its intentions are otherwise, there is no consistency in their explanations regarding how matters would be handled should Zionist settlers establish a presence. He further noted that due to the incoherent narratives surrounding the project, it must be viewed as a highly dangerous undertaking.
Furthermore, Ihusan noted that the Eagle Hills website initially stated a 99-year lease term, renewable for two subsequent 99-year periods. He argued that such an arrangement effectively amounts to a lifetime sale of the property.
Highlighting that emerging details regarding this matter involve several dangerous elements, Ihusan stated that the efforts by senior government officials to refute and manipulate this information have been inconsistent and incoherent. He further noted that there is absolutely no transparency surrounding this project.
Highlighting the potential justifications the government might offer for the project, Ihusan noted that they may frame it as a real estate venture or an initiative to elevate Maldivian tourism to a new level. He further suggested that the government might claim to be undertaking a different type of work altogether, potentially asserting that the project will provide a solution to the ongoing housing crisis.
However, Ihusan stated that the project remains shrouded in mystery, noting that the government has yet to provide clear answers to the concerns raised thus far.
