The Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), has sent a formal letter to the Minister of Health, Family, and Welfare, Geela Ali, urging relevant government authorities to take immediate action regarding an individual causing public disturbances in the Kashimaa Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu area of Male'.
In a letter submitted by Member Ibrahim, it was highlighted that a resident in the area, known for causing public disturbances, is creating significant difficulties for local residents, pedestrians, and motorists alike. The letter further noted that as this issue impacts both social and psychological well-being, it has become a matter of extreme public concern. Consequently, the Member emphasized the urgent need for a swift and immediate solution to the problem.
Member Ibrahim noted that although the National Mental Health Department has been established under the Ministry of Health, the Ministry has been contacted on several occasions regarding the sensitivity of these issues. However, Ibrahim stated that no adequate or permanent solution has been achieved for these matters to date.
Highlighting clauses (c) and (d) of Article 23 of the Constitution of the Maldives, Member Ibrahim stated that every citizen has a fundamental right to access high-quality healthcare services and to live in a clean and healthy environment.
MP Ibrahim stated that the Maldives must reform its approach toward such individuals, aligning with the practices of developed nations that provide specialized rehabilitation programs and medical assistance in similar circumstances.
Furthermore, MP Ibrahim requested clarification on the immediate measures being taken by the Ministry to resolve this issue, as well as the policies in place to establish a permanent social and health protection system for individuals in such circumstances.
MP Ibrahim's letter comes as Mohamed Saeed launched a hunger strike, claiming the entire system has failed after an individual accused of harassing and intimidating families was repeatedly released following multiple arrests. The protest has drawn significant public attention to the issue.
