Expressing concerns over the reduction of extracurricular activities and new mandates regarding the national anthem, Nasheed warned that such unilateral decisions could have a detrimental impact on the future of students.

The Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that while curriculum changes typically require extensive consultation, they are currently being altered via simple phone calls or text messages.
Speaking at an MDP rally held Wednesday night, Nasheed stated that the consequences for students following such curriculum changes are clear. He accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration of attempting to indoctrinate the younger generation into the ideology of what he described as an incompetent government.
Nasheed stated that the education sector is increasingly portraying the singing of the national anthem as something negative. However, he strongly criticized President Muizzu, noting that the President assumed office by specifically addressing and pledging allegiance to the Maldivian flag.
However, they have once again resorted to kissing the flag and placing their hands over their hearts during the national anthem—a practice that even President Maumoon has questioned. Now, every time they stand with their hands on their chests during the anthem, it sometimes makes one wonder if they are suffering a heart attack. They campaigned on this display of patriotism, yet after coming to power, they have remained indifferent to the suspension of the national anthem in schools. This is how the unpopular administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu continues to operate.Mohamed Nasheed
Nasheed stated that such actions are unacceptable, emphasizing that the welfare of Maldivian students remains a core responsibility of the MDP. He affirmed that the party would not abandon this commitment. Furthermore, President Nasheed expressed concern over the lack of extracurricular activities being conducted in schools.
Nasheed stated that events such as inter-house competitions often become lifelong, cherished memories. However, he noted that because such competitions are no longer being held for today's students, they are being deprived of the opportunity to create these lasting memories.
Furthermore, Nasheed stated that revising a curriculum is a complex undertaking that requires extensive labor, vast experience, and in-depth consultations with various experts. Expressing his concern, Nasheed noted that students are being prepared to lead the nation, yet the books and curricula used to educate them are being altered based on nothing more than a single phone call or text message.
Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu announced last September that significant changes will be introduced to Grade 1 textbooks starting next year. The Minister stated that these revisions are essential for strengthening the education system, aligning with President Muizzu’s vision and the commitments outlined in his manifesto.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held a press conference on Tuesday to voice concerns over the government's failure to share details regarding changes to the Grade 1 curriculum with schools, principals, and teachers.
