MDP opens applications for internal party elections

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially opened applications for candidates wishing to contest in its 2026 internal elections.

According to an announcement released by the MDP, the party has now opened applications for various positions across its administrative constituencies.

The positions open for contest in this election include members elected to the National Council from atolls and cities, as well as members for island and city constituencies. Additionally, the election will cover the posts of presidents, vice presidents, and secretaries for these island and city constituencies. Furthermore, the election includes the presidents of the Women’s Wing and the Youth Wing, along with representatives elected to the National Council from both the Women’s and Youth wings. The party confirmed that individuals will be elected to these positions across all constituencies.

To be eligible for candidacy, applicants must be registered members of the MDP as of 2:00 PM on October 20, 2026. The announcement specifically stipulates that candidates contesting for positions within the "Young Democrats" wing must be between the ages of 18 and 31.

In this election, two members will be elected to the National Council for each island or city constituency with more than 500 registered party members. For constituencies exceeding 1,000 members, an additional representative will be elected. Furthermore, two members will be elected from each electoral district within the cities.
