MDP passes resolution to hold National Congress elections by January next year at the latest

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) passed a resolution during its National Congress meeting on Monday night to extend the current term of the Congress until the end of January next year at the latest.
Of the 34 members who participated in the vote, 33 voted in favor of passing the resolution.
According to the resolution, the National Congress elections must be held within one month of the party congress. Furthermore, the term of the fourth National Congress may be extended until that time.
Furthermore, it has been stipulated that even if the elections cannot be held by then, the term of the current National Assembly shall be extended until January 31, 2027, at the latest, with the election mandated to take place on that date.
Party members state that this decision is a significant step toward strengthening internal democracy. They believe it will further bolster the party's operations and enable them to move forward in a manner that effectively serves the public interest.
