Defense lawyers for former President Abdulla Yameen have asserted that the state’s actions against him regarding the MMPRC scandal were handled inconsistently and according to a specific, predetermined design.

During the hearing, legal counsel for former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom argued that the state’s handling of the entire MMPRC scandal was specifically designed to target him, asserting that he has been treated differently from others involved in the case.
Defense attorneys highlighted that the state has employed inconsistent approaches when dealing with President Yameen compared to others charged in the MMPRC corruption scandal. The defense further noted that the state has even withdrawn charges against several individuals involved in the case.
Defense attorneys stated that although the state is attempting to demonstrate that the proceedings in this case have been conducted with fairness and justice, the reality of the situation is quite different.
The Criminal Court previously sentenced President Yameen to five years in prison in connection with the Vaavu Aarah corruption case. Following an appeal to overturn the verdict, the High Court nullified the lower court's ruling and ordered a retrial of the case.
