Cloaking plunder in piety as Muizzu floats Awqaf to bury Hajj scandals

16 ސެޕްޓެމްބަރު 2026 | ބުދަ 09:10

Public criticism is mounting over the government's establishment of a new entity, 'Maldives Awqaf,' with allegations surfacing that it serves as a maneuver to obscure corruption scandals surrounding the Maldives Hajj Corporation. At a time when civil servants are being dismissed under the guise of fiscal austerity, the creation of new state-owned enterprises for political expediency and the appointment of individuals accused of corruption to influential positions pose a significant threat to the integrity of the state’s governance framework

The ruling regime endlessly preaches fiscal discipline while simultaneously doling out lucrative political appointments like party favors.

Under the bizarre umbrella of financial restraint, even handing someone the title of Ambassador-at-Large is unironically peddled as an economy measure.

State-owned enterprises vanish overnight to supposedly reduce state spending, only for massive corporate behemoths to rise directly in their place. The newest brainchild of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives Awqaf Investments Limited, is similarly being packaged as a monumental leap forward in fiscal austerity. It borders on comedy; this administration genuinely believes it can justify any and all excess under the magic banner of saving money.

No matter how absurdly lavish the state expenditures become, they get spun as prudent cost-cutting, like the Maldivian public lacks the basic intelligence to recognize barefaced deceit.

Ruse of duplicate mandates

Simply looking at why this new enterprise was spawned reveals the administration’s dishonesty. Maldives Awqaf Investments was ostensibly rolled out to manage and develop endowments throughout the archipelago, using them to finance religious pursuits, erect and look after mosques, supply required amenities, and launch sustainable business ventures adhering to Islamic Shari’ah.

The stark reality is that existing institutions are already legally bound and fully empowered to fulfill these exact responsibilities. Is the average citizen expected to swallow the regime's official excuses without a single objection?

Obviously not.

Overcoming the Hajj Corporation fiasco

This venture was engineered with deliberate calculation: to put political distance between current leadership and the immense corruption scandals boiling inside religious sectors, notably the mess involving Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Recent revelations of rampant misappropriation within the Hajj Corporation have ignited fierce popular backlash.

A growing chorus of observers and ordinary citizens now openly point out that this brand-new entity was cooked up solely to appease political motives.

Promotion for the implicated

Rather than confronting the public uproar honestly, state leadership executed cosmetic management changes inside the Hajj Corporation to pull attention away from institutional graft and embezzlement.

In a brazen political move to insulate official wrongdoing, Mohamed Shakeel, the Managing Director of the Hajj Corporation, was handed a prestigious seat on the Elections Commission (EC), right while an active Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) probe was looking into his alleged malpractices concerning pilgrimage itineraries.

Instead of demanding transparency or applying disciplinary measures, the government’s instinct was to bury reality by rotating controversial figures into comfortable new offices, entirely destroying whatever thread of public confidence remained in state bodies.

Fiscal disaster meets hidden agendas

The sheer logic collapses entirely when one remembers the backdrop: the administration constantly moans about empty state coffers, wiping out key enterprises and firing hundreds of workers under the pretense of lean administrative restructuring, however, it turns around and conjures completely new state firms out of thin air.

It takes very little imagination to see what is really happening, a covert scheme deliberately plotted to line the pockets of select political insiders.

Sacred pilgrimage funds under the knife

Such shameless conduct leaves deep skepticism over whether public assets are remotely safe, specifically the money devout citizens entrust to the state for sacred obligations like Hajj and Umrah.

Launching a slick new brand to wallpaper over previous crimes simply kicks off a fresh phase of extortion behind a polished exterior.

This constitutes a perilous abuse of public machinery and authority, trampling the legal rights of ordinary people for the sake of narrow political gains.

Rule of law thrown overboard

These dizzying policy contradictions, building new corporate entities on one hand while giving accused actors clean slates in alternative posts on the other, have completely wrecked the nation's economic course, with the collateral damage hitting regular families first.

By aggressively burying the alleged plunder inside a crucial pillar like the Hajj Corporation rather than allowing independent probes to take their course, the regime reveals how thoroughly it has subordinated the judiciary and compromised institutional autonomy.

A new mask for the same old shakedown

Everything here is cold calculation.

The second an existing body becomes so tainted that public trust evaporates, the leadership just erects another one with an untarnished title.

Shady dealings have simply migrated under a new corporate umbrella, using faith and pious duties as an untouchable shield.

They slapped on a different name and an updated visual identity to hoodwink the populace, but the reality is undeniable: forthcoming corruption inside faith-based developments will simply run smoothly through the Awqaf apparatus.

Much like an octopus camouflaging to blend into the rocks, the beast has refreshed its look, but the looting will continue unabated, past crimes will be completely swept aside, and helpless citizens will be left carrying the devastating bill.
