Fulhadhoo Police Station Site Remains Neglected a Year After Pledge

12 ސެޕްޓެމްބަރު 2026 | ހޮނިހިރު 08:01

The Fulhadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the prolonged delay in constructing a new police station, despite allocating a 5,000-square-foot plot for the project. Although some construction materials have already been delivered to the island for the project contracted to Fenaka Corporation, physical work has yet to commence, leaving the designated site overgrown and neglected.

The Fulhadhoo Island Council has expressed concern that despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to establish a police station on the island, no practical work has commenced a year into his administration. The council noted that the land designated for the project remains overgrown and neglected.

Regarding this project, the Fulhadhoo Council stated that the government initially requested a 10,000-square-foot plot of land for the establishment of a police station. However, the Council has informed the government that such a large area cannot be allocated due to the island's limited land availability.

Instead, the council has allocated a 5,000-square-foot plot of land, where the old powerhouse was previously located, for the construction of the police station.

The council noted that since Fulhadhoo currently has only two police officers, the allocated 5,000-square-foot plot is an adequate size for the construction of a police station. However, the council expressed regret that despite the land being secured, no progress has been made on the project.

During the President's visit to the island, the council requested that he lay the foundation stone for the project on that site. However, due to the conditions of the area at the time, it was not feasible to proceed with the ceremony. Despite the significant amount of time that has passed since then, the land remains neglected and is currently overgrown with dense vegetation.

Furthermore, the council stated that although some materials required for the construction of the police station have been transported to the island, they remain untouched and no work has commenced. The council added that the continued suspension of the project remains a significant concern for the island's residents.

Notably, senior officials of the current administration had previously been highly critical of the former government’s practice of awarding development projects to Fenaka Corporation. However, this administration has also contracted the construction of the Fulhadhoo Police Station to Fenaka. This move has drawn criticism from some quarters, who point out a discrepancy between the government’s past rhetoric and its current actions.
