Former Commissioner General of Customs Yoosuf Maaniu has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the newly established Greater Male’ Transport and Mobility office, tasked with overseeing land transportation in the capital region.
According to reliable sources, Maniu was appointed to the position last week.
Maniu was initially appointed as the Commissioner General of Customs under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. While the government did not disclose the reason for his removal from Customs, he was subsequently transferred to the post of State Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. Following his resignation from that position on July 25, 2024, Maniu informed the media that he stepped down because he did not wish to draw a high salary without being assigned any specific job responsibilities.
As part of the government's downsizing efforts, which included the dissolution of Fenaka and RDC, President Muizzu established a new office on July 12, 2026, to manage land transport services in the Greater Male' area. Despite its establishment, the office has yet to commence any official operations. It has been announced that the office will function under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport.
The President's Office stated that this office was established to formulate and implement programs in coordination with relevant authorities to find urgent solutions to the increasing number of vehicles and the growing issue of road congestion in the Greater Male' Area.
Mayor Adam Azim has stated that addressing Male' City's traffic issues remains the responsibility of the City Council, despite the government's decision to establish a dedicated office for the matter.
