Land Transport Act Establishes Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office

The Land Transport Bill has been ratified, establishing a dedicated office titled "Greater Male' Transport and Mobility," along with an advisory board and a fund to oversee land transportation within the Male' region.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the bill during a special ceremony held at the President's Office today.

The bill was passed during the 28th sitting of the second session of the 20th People's Majlis, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The objective of this bill is to establish a modern and robust legal framework for the planning, implementation, and regulation of land transport. It aims to ensure the safety and security of drivers, passengers, and all other users of the land transportation system in the Maldives.

This bill outlines the rules and standards for motorists in land transport, including the regulations for vehicle registration, operation, stopping, parking, and usage. Furthermore, it establishes the framework for public transportation services, the penalties for legal and regulatory violations, and the specific procedures and guidelines governing these matters.

To address the urgent transportation challenges caused by overpopulation in the Male' region, this bill designates the Greater Male' Area as a Registration and Traffic Management Controlled Zone. To ensure the sustainable organization and delivery of land transport services, the legislation establishes a specialized office named "Greater Male' Transport and Mobility" for a three-year term, creates an advisory board known as the "National Road Safety Council" to formulate area-specific regulations, and mandates the creation of a dedicated fund to improve land transportation infrastructure.

The Land Transport Act will come into effect 30 days after it is ratified and published in the Government Gazette. Upon its commencement, Law Number 5/2009 (the Land Transport Act) and Law Number 70/78 (the Road Safety Act) will be repealed.
