Ihusan: Despite MTCC’s claims that Dhiggaru land reclamation project is complete, residents have yet to see results

Former Deputy Minister of Education Mohamed Ihusan has stated that although the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) claims to have completed the land reclamation project in M. Dhiggaru, residents on the island have seen no evidence of the work being finished.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, Ihusan stated that the Dhiggaru land reclamation project was initiated during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration and had reached near completion. Ihusan further noted that the local council had been making extensive preparations, including the formulation of a land-use plan, to ensure the reclaimed land would be utilized in a manner that best benefits the residents.

However, Ihusan stated that the land reclamation work has not been completed to a satisfactory standard. He further noted that as the administration approaches its third year, MTCC maintains that the project has already been finalized.

However, the local residents have yet to see the completion of the project. This means that the reclaimed land has not reached a stage where it is properly leveled and finalized for handover to the council.

The M. Dhiggaru land reclamation project was awarded to MTCC in 2020, with physical works officially commencing in 2022. The scope of the project includes the reclamation of 25 hectares of land, the installation of a 384-meter rock boulder revetment, and the construction of a 287-meter rock boulder breakwater.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure awarded this project to MTCC at a total value of MVR 121.84 million.
